Maintenance for Service Duties

‘A’ Exam completed.

‘A’ Exam completed and run up on the 2nd Jan to shake off those New Years colds (Try and dry out the internals from Cornish condensation).

Nearly all the group’s efforts have been put into progressing various areas of ‘The Sapper’ mostly unseen from the outside. The area in and around the radiator fans and surrounding roof has been stripped back, cleaned, primed, undercoated and even first coat of Oxford blue gloss.

Work to reconstruct the engine room electrical junction boxes and BIS (Battery isolation switch) continues with one junction box and one electrical box now almost complete. The new floor panels around this area and the generator have been marked up, cut out, trial fitted and painted with only the welding to do, then touch up painting.

Meanwhile the boiler room around the blower motor has had extensive attention, with corrosion found to be a little more extensive than first thought meaning a larger package of remedial work. The trunking and motor stand have been removed, the latter stripped back and is being repainted whilst the trunking has been skipped and new in the process of fabrication. Having taken back all the metal work including pipework, the task of priming, undercoating this area has commenced and new floor metals cut which are now ready for welding in. Two air tank drain down pipes, one already failed and one weak from corrosion are being replaced in this area and in the process of being fabricated.

The engine room roof awaits to be lifted off for refurbishment, but has had all the hatches now removed and work on restoring these, freeing up the hinges and fittings, along with scrapping back and steam cleaning is well on the way. The two engine room side doors are also receiving attention now, with stripping back, filling and priming started along with new checker plate foot plates being installed.

None, winter stored and is stabled in Parkway shed currently, staying warm and dry!
